Namibia has been ranked the most gender equal country in Africa, and the eighth most gender equal country in the world as of June this year.

According to the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI), no country has achieved full gender parity yet, although the top nine countries have closed at least 80% of the gender gap.

These countries are Iceland, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, Nicaragua, Namibia and Lithuania.

Iceland takes first position and continues to be the only country to have closed more than 90% of its gender gap.

The GGGI annually benchmarks the current state and evolution of gender parity across four key dimensions: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.

One country from Latin America, Nicaragua (81,1%), and one from Africa, Namibia (80,2%) complete this year’s top 10, taking
the seventh and eighth positions globally, respectively.

Ireland and Rwanda have dropped out of the top 10 this year.

For the 146 countries covered in the 2023 index, the health and survival gender gap has closed by 96%, the educational attainment gap by 95,2%, the economic participation and opportunity gap by 60,1%, and the political empowerment gap by 22,1%,” the GGGI’s report reads.
